Monthly Wallpaper - June 2011: Queer Cinema

In celebration of Gay Pride month, Movie Dearest once again offers up a special calendar wallpaper for June paying tribute to some of the best in queer cinema.

The 2011 edition features such old and new GLBT favorites as The Hours, A Single Man, Little Ashes, The Boys in the Band, Heavenly Creatures, The Wedding Banquet, Breakfast on Pluto and The Birdcage.

All you have to do is click on the picture above to enlarge it, then simply right click your mouse and select "Set as Background". (You can also save it to your computer and set it up from there if you prefer.) The size is 1024 x 768, but you can modify it if needed in your own photo-editing program.

Reverend's Preview: Summer Picks for GLBT Moviegoers

In addition to Beginners (opening June 3) and an onslaught of superhero epics, there are a number of movies being released between now and the end of August that will be of special interest to the GLBT community:

Mr. Popper's Penguins (June 17): OK, so a family film starring Jim Carrey as the surprised recipient of a gift of six penguins might not seem like gay-interest fare. Throw co-star Angela Lansbury into the mix, however, and it becomes the biggest event for her GLBT fans since her 2009 Tony Award-winning turn in Blithe Spirit on Broadway!

The Smurfs (July 29): Similarly, a big-screen version of the more irritating than charming kiddie icons from the early 1980's may tempt us to run screaming from our local multiplex, but Neil Patrick Harris (its openly gay star) will no doubt get me to fork over $10 to watch him help the little blue animated critters fight the villainous Gargamel (played by gay fave Hank Azaria).

Larry Crowne (July 1): Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts reunite in this dramedy co-written by Hanks and Nia Vardalos. Vardalos previously wrote and starred in My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Connie and Carla, both popular among GLBT viewers. Hanks, who played gay in 1993's Philadelphia and won an Academy Award for it, directs as well as stars as a recently laid-off man who decides to go back to college.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (July 15): Femme-centric director Wayne Wang (The Joy Luck Club) returns with a new tale about forbidden friendship between two young women in 19th-century China. Several modern-day scenes include one in a Shanghai nightclub that features a musical cameo by Hugh Jackman.

Friends with Benefits (July 22): Justin Timberlake headlines and reportedly shows a lot of skin in this romantic comedy that has him and hot co-star Mila Kunis (a recent Golden Globe nominee for her bisexual turn in Black Swan) grappling with unexpected emotions that intrude into their initially strictly-sexual relationship. Will Gluck, who made last year's delightful Easy A, directs and Woody Harrelson plays a gay role!

The Perfect Host (July 1): Out actor David Hyde Pierce stars as a man planning a lavish dinner party at which a bank robber hiding from the police shows up in this dark comedy-thriller. Singer-actress Helen Reddy, long absent from the screen since her 1970's heyday, is in the supporting cast.

The Help (August 12): Based on the bestselling novel that details the lives of African-American maids in the early 1960's and the white families for whom they work. The film's star-studded cast includes Emma Stone (also an alum of Easy A), Sissy Spacek, Allison Janney, Viola Davis and Cicely Tyson.

Circumstance (August 19): A lesbian love story set in repressive Iran, this movie has been hailed by some as the best of numerous GLBT-themed entries at this year's Sundance Film Festival. While it is American-produced, much of it was secretly shot in Iran.

Conan the Barbarian (August 19): Summer will end on a hunky note, as newcomer Jason Momoa inherits Arnold Schwarzenegger's loincloth to become Robert E. Howard's classic warrior. Stephen Lang (Avatar) plays his supernaturally-powered nemesis.

Reverend's Reviews: That's Show Biz

Magicians and ventriloquists may be considered by some to inhabit the lower rungs of the show business ladder, but that doesn't give pause to the diverse group of aspirants on display in two new documentaries, Dumbstruck and Make Believe (both opening today in Los Angeles). While one is more accomplished than the other, they make a fascinating "double feature."

Dumbstruck (playing exclusively at Landmark's Regent Theatre, where writer-director Mark Goffman, producer Lindsay Goffman and Dan Horn, one of the ventriloquists featured, will be appearing at select opening weekend shows) follows five voice-throwing puppeteers. They are a 14-year old white boy who operates a black dummy; a six-foot-five woman who has been ostracized by her family; a cruise ship performer with a failing marriage (Horn, who Arizona readers may recognize from his days on The Wallace and Ladmo Show); a former Miss Ohio, whose mother bemoans "She always played with the little puppets; I thought it would end as she got older"; and Terry Fator, the rare success to score a $100 million contract at a Las Vegas resort.

While the filmmakers do a good job showcasing their subjects' talents, I found the movie a bit lacking in exploring their personal lives and motivations. Wilma, the plus-sized former security guard turned ventriloquist, shares "I can say things that I can't say as myself or I'd get fired or beat up" so long as she has her puppet in hand. That's about as far as Dumbstruck goes, though, in revealing what keeps these people devoted to their craft against numerous obstacles. Similarly, we are told Horn's wife is planning to divorce him due to his long periods away from her and their family, but we never hear his wife's or kids' perspective firsthand. We also don't learn what grievance Wilma's family has against her, so the film serves as an accessory to the proverbial "elephant in the room."

On the other hand, Make Believe (which won prominent awards at last year's LA and Austin Film Festivals) more than satisfies with its multi-layered approach to an assortment of teenaged, wannabe magicians from the US, Japan and South Africa. They converge at the 2009 World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas, referred to as "the Magic Olympics," where superstar illusionist Lance Burton will ultimately name one of them Teen World Champion. We see their performances in full, and also meet the young people's friends, family members, classmates and mentors.

"Magic is borderless," according to the impressive Hiroki Hara, an 18-year old Japanese contestant. One-half of a poverty-stricken duo from Cape Town says, "With magic, we're trying to find out who we are as a person." And Bill Koch, a 19-year old magician-musician from Ohio, shares his mantra: "The goal is excellence, nothing less." Such wisdom "from the mouths of babes" could put many older performers in the entertainment industry to shame. Make Believe also provides viewers a rare inside look at LA's famed Magic Castle, with openly gay board member and actor Neil Patrick Harris making a brief appearance.

Make Believe, by the proficient filmmaking team behind 2007's The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters and beautifully shot by Richard Marcus, reaches deep into its magic hat and pulls out a treasury of human and show business revelations. Especially when viewed in conjunction with Dumbstruck, I gained a greater appreciation for those willing to risk all for their respective craft... including the risk of being christened a misfit in our modern, high-tech entertainment world.

Reverend's Ratings:
Dumbstruck: B-
Make Believe: A

ED SCHULTZ APOLOGIZES TO LAURA INGRAHAM: Off MSNBC for one week without pay

During his radio show earlier this week, ultra liberal and MSNBC host Ed Schultz referred to conservative talk host Laura Ingrahm as a "right-wing slut" and "talk slut." Now he is paying the price for his choice of words.

"Rain, thunderstorms, winds getting whipped into tornadoes of horrific proportions. Hot weather, all of this stuff. And what are the Republicans thinking about? They're not thinking about their next-door neighbor. They're just thinking about how much this is going to cost. President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Missouri, on Sunday. But you know what they're talking about? Like this right-wing slut, what's her name, Laura Ingraham? Yeah, she's a talk slut. You see, she was, back in the day, praising President Reagan when he was drinking a beer overseas. But now that Obama's doing it, they're working him over," Schultz said.

Ingraham responded to Schultz's name calling by stating on her Facebook fan page:

"First, I was surprised to learn that Ed Schultz actually hosted a radio show. Is it only available online? Second, I have to get back to recording the audio edition of my new book "Of Thee I Zing." Now I'm tempted to insert one additional zing--about men who preach civility but practice misogyny."

Schultz started off his MSNBC show on Wednesday with an apology to Ingraham and announced that he was leaving the air for a while as a result of his comments.

"I am deeply sorry, and I apologize. It was wrong, uncalled for and I recognize the severity of what I said. I apologize to you, Laura, and ask for your forgiveness.

"I also met with management here at MSNBC, and understanding the severity of the situation and what I said on the radio and how it reflected terribly on this company, I have offered to take myself off the air for an indefinite period of time with no pay.

"To the staff here at MSNBC, I apologize for embarrassing the company and the only way that I can really make restitution for you is to give you a guarantee, and the only way that I can prove my sincerity in all of this is if I never use those words again. Tonight, you have my word that I won't. Laura Ingraham, I am sorry. Very sorry. I'll be back with you in the coming days," Schultz said.

MSNBC released the following statement about Schultz:

"MSNBC management met with Ed Schultz this afternoon and accepted his offer to take one week of unpaid leave for the remarks he made yesterday on his radio program. Ed will address these remarks on his show tonight, and immediately following begin his leave. Remarks of this nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

To his credit, Schultz does sound very sincere with his apology, but very much like a man that is fighting to save his job. Maybe there is room for him over at Current TV with his old friend Keith Olbermann.

MANDATED PROPERTY TAX CAPS ARE A BAD IDEA

Federal or state mandated property tax caps are a BAD IDEA! They undermine the ability of a locality to control its own decisions. It makes local governments more dependent on state and federal government for funding. This is the antithesis of conservatism.

If my community wants to double our property taxes this year to build a monorail from the pizza shop to the diner, that is our prerogative. If we want to add 100 police and firemen to our current workforce of about a dozen, that is a decision for us to make. If we to invest more in our schools, that is our prerogative too. The same goes if we want to cut spending.

In my town of several thousand I have a voice. I can be heard at town council and school board meetings. I can gather a few dozen similar thinkers and make an impression. I can talk to my local Representatives at the grocery store or the diner any morning (instead of getting an e-mail back from Representative or Senator telling me that his mailbox is too full to process my question, but can I send it another time). I can run for office without needing Chinese, Saudi, or George Soros' money. I won't win every debate, but I will be heard. That is the essence of democracy, and that is how as many decisions as possible should be made.

Escalating control to the state or federal level creates a version of the Prisoners' Dilemma that advances the power of government. Each town chips into a big pool of money, and then feels compelled to spend because everybody else is spending from that pool. The amount chipped in keeps rising, and so does the spending. There is no incentive to not spend unless everyone stops spending, and that just won't happen.

Property tax caps are sold as a "conservative" idea. They are not; they are wolves in sheep's clothing. If you don't like the taxes in your town, fight them right there. Or, move and send a message that way. But don't ask big brother government to fight your battles for you; that is no different than demanding entitlements.

LIBERALISM OF TODAY IS NOT THE LIBERALISM OF OLD

Modern day liberalism is nothing like the liberalism of decades ago.

Liberalism of decades ago was something more akin to a more modern day libertarian viewpoint. However, if your world view is that in order to have peace and coexistence on a global basis and there needs to be a global balance of power and economics, everything Obama is doing makes a great deal of sense.

The genesis of the view is that the globe is a finite pie, in order for someone to succeed, someone has to fail. This makes even more sense if you look at the modern liberals view when it comes to punishment of a crime, and the victimhood of the perpetrator. It is never solely the perpetrator’s fault, it is the fault of society as a whole.

In this view, regardless if someone succeeds or fails, it is the responsibility of everyone to provide a balance to the scale.

Look at the case of "climate change". This is not about the environment. The carbon credits took from the prosperous nations and gave to the non prosperous ones. This is about wealth transfer.

Look at allowing rogue regimes continue to develop nuclear weapons. This is not about safety and security; it is allowing others to gain power, thus tipping the scales into more of a balance.

As another case in point, look at the devaluation of the dollar. This is pure a tax on all Americans. It transfers wealth from our nation to others.

The dangers in this view affect everyone, regardless of political affiliation. But I think the true danger is a liberal not knowing what liberalism is any more.

Modern day liberalism is about power and maintaining control at the expense of the ones they profess to be helping.

Liberals have professed to be helping African Americans and Native Americans for half a century now. How are these groups doing? Right now, unemployment is these groups are higher than any other, alcoholism and drug addiction are higher than any other group, education is lower than any other group, and wealth is lower than any other group.

Liberals have been supporting these groups for half a century. I’d say the results are quite poor. But they have to be, as there is no alternative. If these groups were to succeed, they wouldn’t need help anymore. Liberals need racism, they need class warfare, and they need wealth disparity. Without it, they don’t get elected.

Viewed in the backdrop of Marx’s Paris Manuscripts, "the worker relies on labour to find money to be able to live; but he doesn't simply live, he actually only survives, as a worker. Labour is only used to create more wealth, instead of achieving the fulfillment of 'human nature'", the agenda becomes more clear.

This philosophy negates the fact that some people are smarter than others, work harder than others, have greater skills than others, are more fortunate than others etc. In essence, for all their pontification about Darwinian theory of evolution when the topic of religion or faith is brought up, they completely negate it in practice.

ANOTHER EMBARRASSING MOMENT ON THE OBAMA EUROPEAN TOUR

President Obama just does not seem to know when to stop talking, unless the teleprompter tells him "SHUT UP."

The President was toasting the Queen during a formal banquet at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, when he kept speaking during the UK national anthem. Normal British protocol states that you play "God Save the Queen", then the person making the toast is to speak.

After realizing his mistake, Obama set his glass down and may have had the most awkward look of confusion and embarrassment on his face during his presidency.

This was a another embarrassment for Obama on his 2011 European tour, following his limo getting stuck in Ireland and forgetting what year it was when he was signing the guestbook at Buckingham Palace.

While the Boss is Away the Children Must Play

It seems to me that no matter what the post is y'all need something to start you off in the morning. Maybe it's not the post, maybe its Deuce. Doug does a fabulous job and while he is working on his next post, I thought I would throw in this post until he's done. I can't deliver Deuce and the birds slept in this morning, so this is all I have. And don't sit behind your little square screens and grin. Did you really expect anything else from yours truly. Sheesh….

While Arnold is getting all the attention these days for his ten year secret, what an ass, it's taking some of the heat off our good friend Charlie Sheen, who has been replaced with Ashton Kutcher. Now I don't know if Ashton is replacing his character or coming in as a long lost third cousin who ran away with his half sister's first cousin 20 years ago just so they could live in peace and harmony. As you can tell I really don't give a shit.

In other news the famous, Mark Burnett, who started the domino effect on reality TV shows, starting with "Survivor" and then later "The Voice" and "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader" is now doing a five part ten hour series on The Bible. Why? I haven't a clue but he will re-create some famous stories from Genesis to Revelations. You go Mark. I hope, The Bible, is more fulfilling than 16 half nude men and woman surviving on a tropical island.

The Hangover Part 2 almost didn't make the opening show on Thursday because of a lawsuit from the artist who apparently designed the tattoo on Mike Tyson's face that was used in a scene, of The Hangover Part 2. The artist said he has copyrights since he designed the original tattoo, and wanted to be paid for the rights to use his art in the movie. He lost, of course, because Warner Bros wasn't using the tattoo to sell tattoos but was using it as a parody, which falls under "fair use" under the copy right laws. People will do anything to try and make money.

The Obamas met William and Kate yesterday. Yeah… You're right who cares.

And there is really only one pirate that is worthy of any ten year secret and that would be Capt. Jack Sparrow. Yummy….

PRESIDENT OBAMA STUCK IN 2008?

If you have been looking for an answer as to why Obama seems to be stuck in a never ending campaign mode, this picture may just be the answer. It appears the President is still living in 2008.

It is a great privilege to commemorate our common heritage, and common sacrifice.

Barack Obama

24 May 2008

This is actually how President Obama signed the guest book when he visited Westminster Abbey on Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Can you imagine how the liberal MSM would have reacted if this had been George W. Bush.

NETANYAHU DELIVERS HISTORIC SPEECH TO CONGRESS

No teleprompter anywhere, merely the old-fashioned "practice makes perfect" typewritten notes and a glass of water.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered an historic speech before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday. Netanyahu laid out his plan for peace in the Middle East, which includes a two state solution with the Palestinians, but maintained that Israel can not sacrifice security in the process.

"Israel will not return to the indefensible boundaries of 1967. Israel will be generous on the size of the Palestinian state, but we'll be very firm on where we put the border with it.

"Peace must be anchored in security.

"As for Jerusalem, only a democratic Israel has protected freedom of worship for all faiths in the city. Jerusalem must never again be divided. Jerusalem must remain the united capital of Israel.

"Israel will not negotiate with a Palestinian government backed by the Palestinian version of al Qaeda. So I say to President Abbas: Tear up your pact with Hamas! Sit down and negotiate! Make peace with the Jewish state!

"It is vital that Israel maintain a long-term military presence along the Jordan River," Mr. Netanyahu said. "Solid security arrangements on the ground are necessary not only to protect the peace, they are necessary to protect Israel in case the peace unravels," Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu received 25 standing ovations from Congress, which showed an unwavering support for the Israeli leader.

It's refreshing to hear straight talk without ambiguity, and being articulate enough to tell the facts as they are without any double-talk.

Benjamin Netanyahu should be applauded for his willingness to recognize the existence and legitimate rights of his neighbors.

Now if only his neighbors could pay the same respects and recognize the rights of Israel. If not, let the PLO take up their case with the U.N. I'm sure that bastion of double-dealing, low-brow political hacks will be as effective with this conflict as they have everywhere else in the world!

Netanyahu speaks of the greatness of his country, and it's mission on this earth. He defends it's people and history with vigor. He is open to negotiation but unwilling to put his country at risk. He speaks of defending his country at all costs. Israel has demonstrated that it will bend, but never break, and he clearly represents that view.

Our President goes on apology tours and blames the U.S., or some segment of it, for almost every world problem.

Whatever you may think of Israel or how/whether to resolve the problems of the Middle East, there is something in that contrast that is a "teachable moment"

Netanyahu was interrupted by hecklers in the gallery. How he and the members of Congress handled the situation is one for the ages and lead to one of the best lines by Netanyahu.

"I take it as a badge of honor, and so should you, that in our free societies you can have protests. You can’t have these protests in the farcical parliaments in Tehran or in Tripoli. This is real democracy," Netanyahu said."

Toon Talk: Yo Ho-Hum

By the time a successful film franchise hits the fourth installment, a certain formula has usually settled in. In the case of Disney’s hit Pirates of the Caribbean movies, such by-now familiar aspects include a complex plot steeped in legendary pirate lore, a rogues’ gallery of mythical and/or magical characters, enough double crosses and double-double crosses to make your eyes cross, and plenty of swashbuckling stunts and special effects spectacle.

All that, as well as Johnny Depp’s swarthy, swishy Captain Jack Sparrow, are on hand in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, in theaters now. Gone are original trilogy director Gore Virbinski and lovebirds Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. In their place are Academy Award nominated director Rob Marshall (of the glitzy and gritty musicals Chicago and Nine fame) and a love interest for Captain Jack himself, played by Oscar winning actress Penélope Cruz.

But even with this mixture of old and new blood, On Stranger Tides is curiously lacking in excitement, as if we’ve all rode this E ticket too many times to care much any more...

THE OBAMA 2011 EUROPEAN SUMMER TOUR

It's 4:15 AM and I'm looking at the news of the day before I have to get my children up and going. The DOW is down 1%, unemployment claims are back in the Fall of 2010 doldrums, the Euro is in apparent free-fall, gas has "fallen" to just under $4 / gallon, my grocery bill seems to go up $5-10 every week, and total employment in the U.S. is all of about 350,000 jobs higher than it was a year ago.

Oh, I forget to mention that President Obama kicked off his 2011 European summer tour on Monday.

Hey Barry, great job getting Bin Laden! Feel good about it? Good. Now get over it and deal with the realities on the ground here at home. The only time I want to see you leaving on another jaunt around the world paid for by the American taxpayer, is if the economy has a few quarters of 6-8% GDP growth and jobs sustain a growth rate of 300,000-400,000 per month (that's month, not year).

We need to remind Mr Obama that he is President of the United States, not the world. He seems to travel the world to avoid dealing with domestic issues. According to his own Treasury Secretary, the apocalypse is going to happen on Aug 2, but I've not heard of him getting engaged in the process of avoiding it one bit.

The U.S. economy is at real risk of another recession, and Obama wants to take a second round of bows for the Bin Laden raid. Housing prices have fallen for 50+ consecutive months, and he's more worried about visiting the hometown of his great great great Irish grandfather than dying suburbs in Detroit, LA, and Las Vegas. Gas is $4 per gallon, our debt is $14 trillion and Obama is announcing new aid packages for Egypt.

Apparently we have solved all our problems, there is an agreed upon budget in place and the debt ceiling negotiations are completed. It must be true, otherwise it would be the height of irresponsibility for a sitting President to be spending time connecting with his long lost Irish roots when the fiscal condition of the country is teetering on the edge (according to his own Treasury Secretary).

In the 1990's it was ok for Bill Clinton to travel the world like a rock star, because the U.S. was the world's rock star. Our economy was growing, the dollar was strong, and we were leading the world into the Internet age.

In 2011, every possible ounce of our President's energy should be spent dealing with the issues we have at home.

One can't help but feel that the reason that Obama takes so many trips is simply because he can. The thought that the American people might resent his constant traveling, posturing, and seeking after public acclaim never seems to cross his mind.

Keeping the Europeans convinced that Obama has their best interests at heart seems to be more important than avoiding the perception among Americans that he is unable to focus on any of the issues that directly affects the American people.

STAGFLATION RETURNS?

If you do not know, stagflation is the combination of high inflation, slow economic growth, and high unemployment rates. We have not seen stagflation in our country since the Jimmy Carter days, but it could be returning as the conditions in the American economy seem just right.

This was predicted by many, many people, but dismissed by the new wizards of Keynesian finance currently running the Fed, starting with Ben Bernanke. Just to be clear, you can't follow easy money policies without consequences. The consequences usually include some type of asset bubble and, if the money is too egregiously easy, inflation. When they are coupled with gross government overspending, the result also is a suppression of private market activity, i.e, low hiring and high unemployment.

Nice jobs, leftists. You got the chance to experiment with our economy and ourselves and, despite the wise warnings of people who knew better, you replicated an ugly episode in American history. At least we're quicker on the analysis that we were in the 1970's.

There is still time to overturn this nonsense, and the budget negotiations are the way to do it. Cut government spending, drastically, now. That will solve the problem of stagflation.

Our economy will be sick until there is a government in place that appreciates commerce creating the conditions where private investors can confidently fund growth. Threat of new taxes, bailouts and government takeovers of businesses create diseased industries. And there's no such thing as healthy "government investment". We need this socialist crew out of Washington pronto.

Stagflation, economic decline and destruction of the American way of life is what we get due to President Obama's economic policies. Not only do we have clowns and people of no integrity leading in Washington D.C., we have people who refuse to admit they are ever wrong. They need to be replaced immediately with competent people of integrity.

VIDEO: "THE BEAST" GETS STUCK IN DUBLIN

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama began the first leg of their current European Tour in Dublin, Ireland. As the President and First Lady were leaving the American Embassy, Obama's limousine ("The Beast") high centered on an exit ramp and became stuck.

The Obama's were moved to another vehicle, so they could continue their trip to the President's great-great-great-grandfather's hometown of Moneygall.

Notice how the Secret Service moves a parked bus in front of "The Beast" to obstruct anymore pictures or video of the incident.

Reverend's Interview: Mike Mills Memorializes His Gay Dad in Beginners

No one was more surprised than graphic artist turned filmmaker Mike Mills when his father came out as a gay man shortly after the death of Mills' mother. Mills has parlayed his unusual experience into the alternately funny and dramatic new movie Beginners, which opens June 3 in Los Angeles and will expand throughout California and the nation next month. I had the opportunity to watch the movie in advance and speak with Mills about it.

"I have so much at stake with this project: My memories of my dad and my career as a filmmaker," the sensitive, soft-spoken screenwriter/director said. "I feel more like a sharer than an author." Beginners is only Mills' third cinematic outing, following the 2005 film festival favorite Thumbsucker and the 2007 documentary Does Your Soul Have a Cold? "This script was developed with the belief that something this personal can become universal."

Mills' father was 75 years old when he came out and had been married to his mother for 45 years. When his parents married in the 1950's, conservatism and homophobia were the norm in the United States. Mills' father told his wife-to-be he was gay prior to their marriage. She was Jewish, and faced as much difficulty fitting into post-war America as he did. Subsequently, Mills says, "My mom took off her Jewish badge and he took off his gay badge."

Following his mother's death and dad's revelation, their son watched with equal parts surprise, confusion and admiration as his father became heavily involved in Southern California gay life and began a relationship with a younger man. "He just started living this explosive new life," marveled Mills. "He became more emotionally alive than I'd ever seen him." Just five years later, however, the elder Mills was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away. His father's death served as the true catalyst for what would become Beginners.

Mills was fortunate to secure the participation of two fine actors in the roles based on his father and himself: Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music and an Oscar nominee for 2009's The Last Station) and gay favorite Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge!, Star Wars Episodes 1-3). The filmmaker wrote them both very personal, impassioned letters asking them to be in his movie. While both actors were initially hesitant to play characters so close to Mills, they eventually agreed based on the strength of Mills' screenplay and his reassurance that they could make the parts their own. They deliver excellent performances, as do fellow cast members Mary Page Keller (as Mills' mother), Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) and ER's Goran Visnjic, who plays Mills' father's late-in-life boyfriend. An impressive Jack Russell terrier also plays a pivotal role.

"The experience I'm most trying to communicate with Beginners is that of an adventure, the feeling of something breaking open," Mills shared. "While this film has illness and death, it's about beginnings, change, and how deeply funny life can be in its most serious moments." It is a touching movie with truly universal appeal. As Mills has learned via feedback from audience members at early screenings, his father's long-closeted homosexuality wasn't as unique as the filmmaker originally thought.

Beginners is composed of both autobiographical and fictional elements. "I wanted to root around between the way things really happened and the way we choose to remember them," Mills says. In the film, Mills goes back and forth between events in 1955, when his parents married, and 2003, when his father died. The historical sequences include a powerful gay rights montage set to words about "becoming real" taken from the classic children's book, The Velveteen Rabbit.

"The film is hopefully asking, 'What is real, anyway?' Are these memories real, or did I get them wrong?" according to Mills. "I lived with a man whose biography was somewhat fictionalized, a performance of sorts. He had to hide deep, personal, intimate things."

While Beginners tells a broader story than just a gay-themed one, there is considerable gay interest in it. "To be honest, the gay community is the audience I am most concerned about," Mills told me. "My dad's gayness taught me so much as a straight man, but it's definitely a film by a straight man curious about his gay dad and I'm not sure how that will resonate." I assured Mills I didn't think he has anything to worry about; between Plummer's liberated performance and the overall humanity of the film, Beginners will move gay and straight viewers alike.

"I do think my father would have loved coming out to the world through Beginners," Mills concluded. "He would have seen it as keeping the party going — but with a larger invite list."
